Epidural steroid injection is used to relieve pain for spinal stenosis, degenerative disk disease, or a spinal disk herniation. Typically, these back problems lead to inflammation that is extremely painful. Other common reasons for an epidural steroid injection are pinched nerves, annular tears, cysts, and compression fractures. An epidural steroid injection is particularly appealing for relieving spinal pain because it is minimally invasive. Epidural steroid injections can be used for all parts of the spine, meaning pain coming from your cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions.

How does it work?

Epidural steroid injection uses a needle to inject corticosteroids and local anesthetic into the epidural space between around the spinal cord and spinal nerves. The needle allows for the procedure to target the specific part of the back that is inflamed and causing problems for other parts of the body.

The anesthetic gives short term relief and the corticosteroids provide longer-term pain relief. The corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory, relieving the pain that stems from inflammation around the spinal cord. Inflammation is often a common reason for the back pain although the reason for the inflammation can vary. Back pain usually has many causes and inflammation is a side effect of those problems. The steroids used in epidural steroid injection inhibit the inflammatory response caused by the multitude of reasons for the pain. Specifically, epidural steroid injection can be used for a multitude of different back problems that cause inflammation.
